Stuck indoors because of this dastardly weather so what better way of killing time than catching up on music’s latest and greatest.
I’m sort of at a loss for words to describe this track. The one that keeps popping to my head is ‘outrageous’. There’s an edgy feel to the song that makes it gleefully seething. The lyrical content is an anguished lament about broken love that is back-dropped by a dark, chill-out sound that repeatedly brings to mind something put out by Four Tet -but harsher and without the organic sounds. Which is not meant to sell the song-writing short. Loads of people attempt to sing about the regretful aspects of love but Banks captures the emotional turmoil with lines like: “Before I ever met you, I never knew I could be enemies with disregard”. And when Banks declares, “You and I don’t work out”, it’s hard not to be reminiscent of White Town’s classic Your Woman but with a greater sense of indignation.
This probably won’t get a tonne of mainstream love but it’s still really delicious.
